It's been a journey of several years, but today I had my braces put on. I feel like I should say "installed" because OH MY WORD does my mouth ache. I'm on an every 30 years schedule with braces. I've made my 2043 appointment already.
NB: there will be no picture to accompany this post, so don't bother scrolling down.
The orthodonture is not for vain or cosmetic reasons -- have you seen my hair? I have many faults but vanity about my looks is not one of them. It was a choice between jaw surgery, "Train Tracks" or chronic pain. "Metal Mouth" is the last step of a several year TMJ mitigation process that included three other "appliances" for different periods of time to re-align my jaw. TMJ is invisible, but painful and on the edge of disabling if you get a terrific migraine to accompany your sore jaw. Explaining the feeling to non-TMJ sufferers is like explaining snow to natives of Barbados -- I've done both and it's futile.
But, this post is not a plea for sympathy. No. It's to apologize to my sons!
Boys remember when you got your braces on and I told you you'd feel better in a few hours or days.
I was lying!
I'm sorry.
Please forgive me.
I should have let you have milk shakes for dinner more often.
If you're reading this post upstairs come find me right now and I'll make you a milkshake!
