Several years ago when I tried to buy a refrigerator I thought for one brief shining moment I had successfully purchased one.
I got a call on a Thursday night that it would be delivered the next day between the convenient hours of 10 and 2.
At 10:10 on Friday morning I got a call from the appliance store (which I'm tempted to mention by name, but will only tell you that it rhymes with and causes "tears.") telling me that the refrigerator I ordered was not actually in stock and was back ordered for 6 to 8 weeks. At that point I tried to cancel my order so I could buy something else and have a refrigerator in my home sooner than 6 to 8 weeks (the old one had died and we were using our neighbor's refrigerator in her garage and a dorm refrigerator borrowed from another friend, so convenient for everyone involved! First world problem I know.)
The customer "service" representative on the phone quoted me the amount that would be credited to my Visa card. Which didn't exactly match my receipt. It was $70 less, because apparently delivery costs are not refundable. So I had to pay for delivery of a refrigerator that was neither available nor delivered.
... Until I explained to the "supervisor" over the phone why I thought they should make an exception to this policy considering they didn't have a refrigerator to deliver to me.
I went to another appliance store and bought another refrigerator which I was not charged delivery for and which arrived exactly when it was scheduled to!
Unfortunately 31 days later the insulation in the freezer compartment went on fire.
(It happened to be mother's day. I thought my children were burning breakfast for me -- a breakfast made of plastics.)
That was one day after the warranty was up.
Another discussion with another supervisor.
A loaner refrigerator for a few days from the second appliance store while the warranty was in question.
Another new refrigerator.
So in summary.
- Old refrigerator that died.
- New refrigerator that never arrived.
- Borrowed dorm refrigerator.
- Neighbor's spare refrigerator in the garage.
- New Refrigerator that went on fire.
- Loaner from the appliance store while warranty was being contested.
- Another new refrigerator that still works three years later, but I haven't taken the tags off of.
Love these stories. Just saw where I can make a comment.. DUH!
