Before I ask this question, I should clarify that I live in a small town in which the only "traffic" I could come across is a combine trying to get to the next field. So here's the question:
Did you know that a rental box truck that any old driver can rent is not allowed on ANY parkway in New York City?
Me neither, but that is what the cop said when he pulled us over. (ugh - for the record, I wasn't driving)
A little back story - two small women driving a box truck (11'0 clearance btw which I checked because I did notice the signs that said 11'8" clearance - and 8" clearance seemed like plenty) were heading to NY for a yarn festival so our big load was nothing but fluffy yarn.
Anyway - the cop was none too happy with us that he had to leave his perch to chase us down and say we wouldn't fit under the bridge. At this point (we later concluded), we decided that it was a very good thing that we were both teachers because we are happy to be flexible in our personalities. Confronted with an officer who "really wanted to write us a summons (what! I don't have time for that)" we knew we could go with:
angry: see my above parenthetical comment
sad: would tears impact this attitude we were getting
ditzy: I had no idea officer (we did border on the brink of this one)
logical: but sir we fit at 11'0" so what is the problem
thankful: We totally opted for this one! "Thank you so much officer! We need your help!" (Who would write a summons for that one? Thankfully not this guy.)
How did we get out of this one? He held up traffic in two directions while my friend drove over a curb, a median, and another curb. Good times - we then spent 5 hours driving through small side streets in NY city avoiding anything that looked like it should actually hold a truck.
I do not know what UPS does in that place, but I am glad to be back home and I think I have even stopped twitching when I merge onto Parkways...
