Conversation: The Chicken Edition

Context:  A friend showed me a picture of her new backyard chickens, complete with coop clock.

WandaLouise:  Your chickens are gorgeous.  I’m glad to see that you put a clock in the coop.  I’d hate for them to lay eggs at the wrong time of day.  I suspected you were brilliant, but the clock in the coop really did it for me!

Edith:  Well, the clock is actually for me.  I'm terrible at keeping track of time.....I always think I'll step in the coop and tidy up a few things--which is practically impossible to do because everything is SO incredibly dusty 24/7--and before I know it an hour has passed.

Wanda Louise:  Oh.

Edith:  Although I like to think that the methodical "tick-tock" sound has some kind of calming effect on them or helps them regulate their circadian rhythms allowing for greater egg production.  This is purely an "Edith" theory, not based on a lick of science.  I have lots of them, none of which would stand up to the scrutiny of the scientific method for 5 seconds.
