This is almost too easy.
I called the NON-EMERGENCY number of the local sheriff to say that an alarm had been going off in the empty house behind me for five hours and that someone may want to take a look around. It's hard to explain but essentially the back corner of our backyard is across the street from their front yard. If you know me in real life you know which house I'm talking about. There's a good 1000 feet between our actual houses, so to hear the alarm from my house was not only borderline annoying, but really, really odd.
It's been raining all day. My first thought was sump pump alarm. The husband thought smoke alarm gone bad. Ace thought carbon monoxide detector. The boys were hoping to see a body bag carried out. Seriously??
I clearly said to the dispatcher: "This isn't an emergency, but if someone is in the area they may want to check it out."
Ten minutes later the county K-9 unit is there.
Twenty minutes later there are three Sheriff's cars.
Thirty minutes later there are three fire trucks along with aforementioned K-9 unit and patrol cars. I could see a total of 12 people in various uniforms, some including face masks, from my kitchen window. And flashlights prowling around the yard with uncounted uniformed people holding them.
(The K-9 unit dog was not wearing a uniform in case you need to know.)
(Although he would have looked very handsome in one.)
(The Corporal also does not wear a uniform.)
(I do however have a prison costume for him.)
(It includes a hat)
(He doesn't really like it.)
(The whole costume, not just the hat)
(Quit distracting me with questions about dogs!)
I guess it was a slow crime night in our county -- as usual -- thank goodness.
The house has been mysteriously empty for most of nearly ten years, but someone comes and mows the lawn and unstuffs the overflowing mailbox every few weeks. Really, as far as neighbors go they are great. So quiet we hardly know they're there -- because they aren't.
We've never seen the current owner and only knew the previous owner by sight for a friendly wave.
We do know that whoever the current owner of the mystery house is, is going to have a hefty repair bill to sort out sometime soon, as the firemen broke into the house with an axe it seems.
We'll probably never know what was really going on over there tonight, I don't really care to but I hope they get it all figured out soon, because frankly 10:30 is too late for me to be up tending to a blog that's writing itself.
The good news is that the alarm has stopped.
....Only to be replaced by the flashing lights of four patrol cars and three fire trucks.
