English as a second first language

Apparently December 2014 is the month I blog about foreign languages.

I think I've mentioned this before, but our son Kale is taking both Latin and French (and English) in high school.  Yes, fifty percent of his day is about language.  Strange for a boy who claims to hate reading.

[I could search for a post about it but frankly I'm too lazy to go back and look it up]

Originally he started taking French due to a messy scheduling problem that involved jazz band, summer world history and administrative incompetence ....

[but this is not a school rant post so let's just move on....]

Kale loves French, or the cute French teacher, or maybe a combination of both?  I don't know.  In any event he really enjoys foreign languages and seems to have a gift for learning them. He's actually trying to complete both French 2 and French 3 this year so he can move on to AP French next year.

Remember when he and Cicero and "our Colin" spent a summer learning Portuguese so they could be on the US Olympic badminton team in 2016?

[Did I write a post about that?  If I can't even look up a post about French I'm way too lazy to look up a post about Portuguese -- I can barely even spell Portuguese.]

Anyway, he's really enjoyed using Duo Linguo to practice and try out a few new languages.

Tonight at dinner he told us that he tried the Duo Linguo application for French ESL learners.

So basically my kid who speaks English as his FIRST and until now only LANGUAGE was trying to learn English as if he spoke French as his first language.

We asked him how its going.  He answered, and I quote:

 "It was pretty easy"

THANK GOODNESS!!!

He also has informed us that he may want to major in modern languages in College.  But NOT ENGLISH.  He's very clear about that.

Oh Kale.
